This town was established when the Native Huna Tlingits relocated out of Glacier Bay thousands of years ago. Your excursion proceeds to the first two stops where your local guide will begin to narrate the history and culture of the Huna Tlingits that have shaped this town for so many years. Then you are off to learn about the unique way of life for the residents of the island. You will hear about the influence of WWII, the fire of 1944, and the timely coincidence that allowed them to rebuild. Notice the few paved roads and no stoplights as you make your way to the National Forest Service office.
Now it is time to learn about the heavy brown (Grizzly) bear population and Sitka black tail deer that inhabit Chichagof Island. The importance of the Old Growth forest that envelopes the island is a great source of plants and protection for the animals and Huna Tlingits. You will learn about the importance of the logging industry as well. This island is a very diverse place to live so come along for a fact-filled look at Hoonah.
